Based on the 1990’s blockbuster film, Ghost the Musical brings the beloved supernatural romance to stages across the UK. The musical follows the story of Molly and Sam, a couple whilst on their walk home one night are attacked. Sam sadly passes away, and his ghost tries to protect Molly from their attacker. Sam’s ghost struggles in the paranormal life where he is unable to communicate in the real world, but he soon finds a method of communication through an unlikely source!
We had never seen the popular film before so went into the show with no idea of the story that would unfold. We absolutely adored this production, which lived up to the high reputation of the film that preceded it. The highlight to the show was the story – the plot had us on the edge of our seats for entire performance. The show felt well paced and perfectly blended humorous elements with genuine emotion.
Another highlight to this performance was the set. The set featured numerous full set pieces with scenery that set each location perfectly. Each set was well designed, well utilized and aesthetically pleasing. The subway scene was a particular stand out piece for us – without giving too much away – the special effects were brilliant.
The cast were all a pleasure to watch and did a fantastic job in portraying this moving story. A standout performance for us was Jacqui Dubois playing Oda Mae, the physic medium who is able to interact with Sam’s ghost. We laughed so much at her authentic portrayal of a stereotypical fraudulent fortune teller, one of the best performances we’ve seen on stage.
The only slight negative to the show was the soundtrack. Although the songs complemented the story well whilst watching, there was nothing massively memorable. After the show we listened to the soundtrack a couple times more and couldn’t find any songs that stuck with us or would be desperate to listen to again.
We really enjoyed seeing Ghost the Musical, which highly exceeded our expectations. If the show was to tour again in our area, we would certainly return.
